Edgar Poe (full name Edgar Allan Poe) was born on January 19, 1809 in the city of Boston, Massachusetts in an artist family. The father, David Poe, died when his son Edgar was not born, while the mother Eliza died when Edgar Poe was only three years old. The orphan boy was adopted by John Allan, a wealthy tobacco dealer. Then Poe enrolled in the University of Virginia, but only studied the first year and decided to join the army. It was around mid-1827, also when Poe's first book appeared. After being discharged from the rank of sergeant in the early 1829, Edgar Poe published the second book titled Al Aaraf, which made a big sound.
